Scenario: A customer is looking for a product that we do carry, but that is currently out of stock

Unacceptable Answer: I'm sorry, we don't have that product right now.

Better Answer: I'm seeing that this particular item is currently out of stock. Let me check to see how long the backorder is. I'll also check whether I can find it elsewhere or whether this is a nation-wide stock problem. While I'm doing this, can you tell me a bit more about your project? Do you need this item specifically or can I help you find alternative pieces in a similar style?
